On his way to Jerusalem, Jesus is approached by ten lepers asking to be healed. Under Jewish law, lepers were considered “unclean,” forced to endure public shame and live far away from others. Jesus tells the ten to report to a priest to show they have been healed. One leper returns to thank Jesus for healing him, recognizing it was Jesus who had the real power to declare him “clean.” He also gives Jesus thanks because Jesus sees him as having worth and dignity. He will no longer have to live outside society because Jesus declares he is lovable and important.
